Major Course Guide

Year 1 │ Understanding Chinese Culture

This course helps you understand the culture of China, one of the world's superpowers. We will explore not only China and the Chinese people, but also its population, regional culture, lifestyle, politics, economy, and religion. The most basic starting point for this exploration is the attitude of understanding the culture of others from the perspective of Koreans, free from the fallacies of Sino-Chinese thought repeated by our ancestors in the past and the current myths of prudent modernization. Based on this, we will study various Chinese cultures and develop an independent observational perspective.

Year 2 │ Intensive Chinese 1,2

This course is designed for students who have taken Chinese 1 or 2 or equivalent, and provides an in-depth study of intermediate-level Chinese vocabulary, syntax, and grammar. Students will learn and utilize a variety of expressions for listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Year 3 │ Chinese Fiction & Culture

This class is designed to help students savor the artistry of Chinese epic literature and gain a deeper understanding of the life and culture of the Chinese people through reading and appreciating representative Chinese novels.

Year 4 │ Modern Chinese Literature and Popular Culture

Through the reading of works, students will examine the relationship between contemporary Chinese literature and popular culture, and further understand the historical tradition of China and the actual situation of popular life through an approach to cultural phenomena in China.

Academic Activities

International Field Trips

Study at a local university in China for a semester (6 months) to broaden horizons and learn about Chinese language, society and culture. Participants will develop fluency in practical Chinese and broaden their knowledge and horizons while studying and living in the country

Academic Festivals

Chinese poetry recitation, Chinese choral singing, dance, and symposiums are organized around Chinese theater. Students can improve their Chinese language skills through storytelling, directing, and editing in Chinese, and feel more intimate with Chinese literature.

Workshop

Teams plan, organize, and produce a video on an open-ended topic related to China. Students will be able to apply and utilize the Chinese language they have studied for four years, develop practical conversation skills, and gain a deeper understanding of Chinese culture. On the day of the workshop, each team will present their work, and the winners will be judged by professors in the department. The winning team will receive a cash prize and the honor of performing on stage at an academic festival.

Lectures/Speakers

We invite Chinese or external experts on China to give lectures on the Chinese economy, Korean companies in China, and Chinese culture, and have Q&A sessions to help students get to know China more vividly. The various knowledge acquired about the current economic and social situation in China and entering the Chinese market will be of practical help to students when they decide on their career paths and challenge employment and entrepreneurship.
